LOOKING DOWN ON MAKAPUU POINT

From the highest "pill box" one can look down on Makapuu Point and also the light house located slightly down the cliff.  You can see the paved road which leads to the light house.  This is the route to take if you are a beginner but I think the views are more spectacular taking the harder route.

THE START OF THE TRAIL

Looking to the southwest one can see the start of the trail indicated by all the cars parked along the highway.  From this point is a spectacular view of Koko Head crater which is an extinct volcano similar to Diamond Head.

SPECTACULAR BEACH

Below is a spectacular beach located near Sea Life Park.  In the foreground is the abundant cactus which covers the area.  You can also see the highway weaving around the cliffs.  This area of the highway has many rock slides.

THE START OF THE KOOLAU MOUNTAINS

From the vantage point one can see the spectacular Koolau Mountain Range.  Hang gilding is popular off the top of the cliffs.  In fact the world record for staying aloft in a hang glider was set off these cliffs.

LOOKING SOUTH TOWARD ANOTHER "PILL BOX"

You can see why this area was so important to the military.  From this site one can view the majority of the southeast corner of the island.  Many miles of ocean can also be viewed in order to spot invading forces.

ANOTHER VIEW OF RABBIT ISLAND AND A SMALLER ISLAND

From this view one can see a spectacular little bay on the smaller island.   Many individuals paddle out to these islands in canoes.  The islands, however, are protected because they are bird sanctuaries
